The first time Loki pays a visit to Jotunheim, he goes in secrecy, and he does so on his own. He does so without thr knowledge of his meddlesome older brother or All-Father Odin, or even good Heimdall, whose gilded gaze is known to reach far through all the realms. No, muses Loki with undeniable satisfaction, not even the sharp eye of Asgard's gatekeeper can reach him here.

His journey takes him through Yggdrasil's labyrinth of covert pathways that lead beneath Asgard to Jotunheim. The shield of his own magic keeps him guarded. His passage, Loki is confident, is safe--well, as safe as it can be, Loki reminds himself. This is Jotunheim, after all.

When he emerges on the other side of the portal, he finds himself in the middle of a great ice-cavern, tall cliffs barricading either side and stretching high into an opaque blue-grey sky. The frozen realm's landscape is all jagged forms of rock and ice, sharpness fading into shadow. A frigid wind howls through the valley and moans over the unforgiving terrain.
